New Authors' Feedback Kicks off Writing Tools, New UI, Story Graphs, and More!

With two new authors giving me feedback this week, I had a ton of slack to pick up and boyo DID I! This was the most productive week in Noveletta history. And the focus on authors is clearer than ever as I aim to build the best-in-class author operating system ever to have graced the written word! HUZZAH! Thank you to Dallas and Shawn! Here’s a run through on the mountain of changes that made it into production this week:

🕸️ The Story Graph — Relationships visualized

A living constellation of every character, place, and group you've met! This is Noveletta’s core brought to life, showing the deep connection and understanding, broken out chapter by chapter, of who, what, when, and where for everything you’ve seen.

This beautiful dynamic feature still needs a lot of tuning, but it’s the literal representation of what happens at the data level with Noveletta, showing how it interprets the series chapter by chapter. See exactly how each character connects to who they were and when they were in the same event in which chapter! Or run a full timeline of the knowledge as the world rolls out to you.

📖 Exports! Chapter or the full manuscript for authors

Authors can now download their work as Word (.docx), EPUB, PDF, Markdown or plain text — one chapter, one book, or the entire novel. The Word and PDF exports come out as a properly formatted manuscript: US Letter, running head, page numbers. Stay tuned as we evolve this with more styling and control options for industry-standard publishers 👀.

✍️ More writing tools!

The editor took leaps and bounds with the help of feedback from two authors this week and myself trying my hand at writing a chapter. Lots of tweaks, additions, and improvements to make weaving a story feel natural and supported.

• Autofill! Your characters light up as you type, and typing a name offers to complete it. Hover one and you see who they are; hold ⌘ and click to open their full history beside you.
• Paste persisting format! Copy from Word, Google Docs, etc and Noveletta will retain the text formatting from the original location.
• Find & replace. Quickly search all entries with a sleek find menu that is paired with a replace and replace all for bulk changing entries in a given chapter.
• KEYBOARD shortcuts — typing #, >, 1. creates headers and markdown formatting. Adjustable text size while you write, plus keyboard shortcuts for formatting.
• Safety guards! If you are taking actions that will undo saved work you get a quick verification message before that work is lost.
• Celebrate the Win! Congratulations prompts on completed chapters with “Your chapter has set sail!” and the shareable link, previewed exactly as it will look when posted.
• A daily word counter in the toolbar — “2,431 words · 9 min read · +340 today.” Our authors said keeping up with their writing goals can be challenging and they wanted this to keep them accountable to totals per day.
• Faster notes: one field instead of three plus auto tagging characters in note messages. More on this soon!
• Mobile ready! Mobile optimizations so it’s fast and easy to keep editing and writing on the go easily.

🧭 One navigation system, everywhere

A full redesign so the site, the story pages, the knowledge base, the studio, the reader, and the editor all navigate as one, so it’s easier to see what tools are available and to get where you want to be quickly! On phones everything collapses into one drawer. Menu items only appear if you're actually allowed to open them.

🔍 Accuracy — the knowledge base tune up hits the road!

Each time I work on this, it gets better; it’s not perfect, but it keeps getting better! This repeated progress is promising, I can keep putting in work on quality and the returns continue to improve.

• Characters renaming and reveals captured
• Linking quotes to speakers, subjects, and listeners!
• Error capture and correction workflows for self improvements
• Chapter event processing and timeline sequencing

🔒 Privacy and trust

Blocking bot traffic to source material public sites and views while enabling discovery and SEO performance for author reach. This is complicated because we need authors to be protected, but exposure is what helps them grow, so protecting sensitive information while maximizing their reach online is a tightrope that has to be walked page by page on what should and should not be scrapeable by Google, AI agents, and bot traffic. I like this solution because it keeps the metadata Google’s SEO scraper and AI platforms’ scrapers need to make good recommendations and search results, while blocking access to the raw text. Sorry for the nerd tech talk, but I’d rather show you how the sausage is made so that protection and risk are clearly communicated.

⚙️ Reliability (the unglamorous, important half)

These aren’t interesting, but know that I spent 7 coffees’ worth of energy optimizing database protections and performance while creating strong workflows for faster development so I can serve changes to authors faster after completing my quality assurance and testing. Yucking unsexy stuff but will pay off for everyone.

🎨 Make it PRETTY!

From the home page hero to the header styling to little itty bitty link UI cleanups, I made tons of presentation changes to improve the touch and feel for everyone. I also brought an updated voice to much of the copy as Noveletta moves beyond helping just the Wandering Inn to supporting authors at all stages. Please tell me if my baby is ugly!
