Also known as: chess, Chess Board
A strategy board game from Erin’s world that she uses to focus and cope with pain.
The version of chess played in Liscor was standardized by The Titan of Baleros just a few years ago. It uses custom-carved pieces modeled after local species and roles, such as a Drake with a sword and shield for a knight, and a figure in robes representing a Mage instead of a bishop.
A chess board and game are the central focus of the chapter's conflict. Erin and Olesm play a high-stakes match to settle her dispute with Lism, with the local rules and custom pieces being described.
Chess is the medium through which Erin defeats Olesm and wins her money. It later becomes a central metaphor for the violent, zero-sum nature of the world, which Erin ultimately rejects in favor of making her own rules.
