“Almost definitely. But that’s not all I’ve heard. And my news is more disturbing.”
“There’s a Named-rank adventurer in the city right now. You might have heard of her. Gazi the Omniscient.”
“What it means, Gregor, is that whatever Charlez and his group ran into, they didn’t even get a chance to fight back before it ripped them to pieces. And then something—it might have been another monster or the same one—reanimated them and sent them back out. That’s a serious threat.”
“I’ll tell you why. It’s because she’s being cautious. And if a Named adventurer doesn’t want to go in just yet—”
“Don’t be stupid, Cervial. You can’t expect these ruins to be the same.”
“None of us are cowards, and you’d do well to remember that before tossing around insults, Calruz. But this changes things.”
“I’m sorry, but Gregor’s right. It’s too risky, and my group needs more space to cast our spells. If we knew for certain what was below, I’d join you. Cervial, you should think this through as well.”
“We agreed to come Calruz, but that doesn’t mean we put ourselves under your command. We’re all equals here, and we go in properly or we don’t go in at all.”
“It’s not that uncommon. Other nations use the undead, although I’ve never heard of one serving drinks. What do you think, Byres?”
“There are some Silver-rank adventurers in the city. Some good ones that I know. It wouldn’t hurt to have them with us, and as Cervial said, we need time. A day or two of delay won’t lose us any time. Myself, I’m more concerned about our formations. Ceria has said she can learn the [Illumination] spell in time, but even if we get that cast, how will we approach the actual exploration phase? I’m not too keen on splitting up our vanguard—”
“You told us, but I didn’t believe—”
“Hm. [Detect Magic]. Nothing.”
“Gold? Gold?”
“I will talk with them. One moment—hold on, what’s this?”
“We don’t have time to block everything off. How about this? We’ll set wards that will go off if something crosses them.”
“Done.”
“We of the Circle of Reneë have prepared our spells.”
“It’s not money obviously. But what is it? It looks—like part of something else. A broken piece of gold from a wall or—or statue or something.”
“Done. I’ll cast a [Muffle] spell so we don’t get the worst of whatever you’re about to do.”
“Give me a minute. Can you clear the area first?”
“I can! But I need an opening! And the dead are behind us as well!”
“[Wall of Flames].”
“We could set traps and fortify this location. If we need to retreat—”
“Calruz is right. In a straight battle without an ambush, we’d hold the advantage. If we could turn it into that, I’d place all my bets on our side winning handily. But how do you propose we do that, Calruz? Those monsters aren’t exactly smart, but they’re clever enough not to commit to an all-out attack. You saw how they retreated once we put the barriers up.”
“I know that spell. But are the rest of you agreed…?”
“That was a disaster.”
“A Crypt Lord is a threat capable of wiping out a Silver-rank team if they’re not careful. Recommended level to combat them is…around 22. Possibly 26 if you factor in their special abilities. They’re mostly dangerous because they can command the dead around them to do things like lie in wait or use pincer attacks.”
“They were being led by Crypt Lords, that’s how. Those bastards can command the other dead.”
